Every season provides inspiration for creativity and artwork. With the arrival of spring flowers, there is once again, no shortage of ideas. I recently did a still life study of tulips in a vase for my children’s art classes. The bright yellow petals contrast beautifully with the dark blue vase, while the complimentary purple (opposite to yellow on the colour wheel), works well as a background colour. Our still life composition is also a study of light and shade. I encouraged the children to mark out areas on the vase and fruit which are not to be coloured in, as these are sections where the light shines on the objects. Similarly, we used darker colours on each object to show the shaded areas.
Later that week, I was thrilled to receive some photos from parents who framed their child’s artwork to display at home. The tulips in the grey framed picture was done by 7 year-old James, while the wooden-framed artwork of tulips in a spotted blue vase was painted by 10 year-old Lydia. It made my day, as I love to see the children’s artwork on display.
I plan to hold some art classes for adults in Glounthaune Community Centre in April 2023 and at future dates, to be decided.
