Back to School – Cartoon Illustrator

It’s good to be back.  We’ve had a frazzled few months building a house extension but life is now returning to normal.  And it’s back to school time, buying uniforms and queuing outside bookshops.  Continue reading

Kids in Cars – Cartoon  Illustrator

Have you ever left your child alone in the car to quickly dash into a shop? Apparently a parent was prosecuted in the UK for neglect for doing just that. If this is the case, lock me in prison and throw away the key because I’m guilty. But surely I’m not alone? Hasn’t every parent at some stage done this?

Mothers Day – Cartoon Illustrator

In the supermarket we were met by a wall of rosebud patterns and “I love you” text.  Leftover Valentines?  ‘Mother’ read the ornately scripted greetings.

“Oh, I’d forgotten,” confessed daughter, quickly scooting past the celebratory cards.  Was she guiltily going to get me something?   Continue reading

Spend by Cartoon Illustrator Maeve O’Keeffe

Do today’s kids get too much pocket money?  In a recent survey carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions @creditunionie , teenagers are apparently receiving an average of €13 a week, while research commissioned by Danske Bank shows that most parents are giving an average of €27 a month to children aged between 12 and 15 years.

Is this overkill or the expected stipend for teens to survive in today’s economic climate?  And if mums & dads don’t cough up, are we bad, cheapskate parents? Continue reading

Handwriting – Cartoon Illustrator

I read an interesting article in the @IrishTimes maintaining that primary school doesn’t teach children crucial life skills.  With a busy curriculum, there is little time for PE, while skills like sewing typically don’t get done.  But handwriting, too, seems to have taken a hit. Continue reading

Night Class – Cartoon Illustrator

A familiar pamphlet was pushed through the letterbox – Adult Education Night Classes.  I dropped the hoover to look through the list.
Over the years (pre and post babies) I’ve loved doing night classes in all sorts of things like computers, yoga, tennis, photography, printmaking and creative writing.  Never made it to TaekwonDo, Ballroom or Line Dancing but you never know, if Garth Brooks lands a gig here, might give that a go.  I was a night class junkie, addicted to my fix of self improvement and shamelessly happy to escape from the kids. Sales Madness by Illustrator Maeve O’Keeffe

Sales – Cartoon Illustrator

Christmas is over, the kids are back in school and it’s only now I have time to browse around the sales.  But at this stage, I think “What’s the point?”  Surely all the good stuff is gone?  Although there might be a few bargains left.  Continue reading

Last Santa visit? – Illustrator Maeve O’Keeffe

Xmas 2014 – Cartoon illustrator

There’s a time for everything.  We all know that once kids leave Primary school, Santa pretty much stops coming.  It’s purely practical.  As they grow up, older children make way on Santa’s list for all the new babies that are born – there’s only so much the elves can do and only so many toys to go around. Continue reading
