Sorting schoolbags can be stressful!

Sorting schoolbags can be stressful!

It’s back to school time this week.  I’m ‘up the walls’ trying to label and cover schoolbooks, stitch up frayed school jumpers, sort out lunchboxes, ensure the kids have enough pencils, biros, erasers and so forth in their pencil cases.  Damn! Forgot to get rulers and set squares, not to mention more hardcover copybooks.  Does the list ever end?  There’s that calculator I didn’t get and Junior’s novel for English class that was out of stock.  What else?  Must stitch on name-tags to his new school jacket – don’t want that to get lost in the first week.   Continue reading

Public Speaking by cartoonist Maeve O’Keeffe

Public Speaking can be a nerve-racking experience!

Ever had to speak in public and cope with nerves?

Last Monday morning I was on the radio.  I spoke to Cork 96FM’s Deirdre O’Shaughnessy on the Opinion Line about the wastefulness of new edition schoolbooks, the weight of schoolbags and back to school costs.  Deirdre was great – so easy to talk to that I forgot my initial nervousness.

They say that one of the worst fears humans face is speaking in public.  I’m generally fine if I have something prepared, but having to make an unscheduled emergency announcement off the cuff, out of breath and in front of a crowd is another matter.  Like our Sunday morning sidewalk debacle some time ago… Continue reading

The Rollercoaster Ride of Parenthood!

Rollercoaster.ie

My rant about having to clean out the boys’ schoolbags (Schoolbag, posted July 30th) appears on today’s Rollercoaster.ie Facebook page.

Rollercoaster.ie is Ireland’s leading website on pregnancy & parenting so it’s great to see Frazzled Mammy make her appearance on this popular Facebook page.  Even if she (I) failed to take a rollercoaster ride for real, as written in my second blog (scroll down) last April!

New edition schoolbooks seem like a rip-off in back to school cost

Instead of reuse, new edition schoolbooks seem like a rip-off for back to school costs.

Now that school reopening is just around the corner, the pressure is on to get the books and schoolbags sorted.  Daughter’s old Junior Cert books are still stacked on the floor.  Although segregated into piles of what can be dumped, sold or potentially passed on, it’s a tedious job.  Same with the uniforms – what can be salvaged and handed down to the next sibling?  Would another child use the perfectly good but outgrown tracksuit? PS4 puts precious school holidays in perspective!

PS4 GAMING CONSOLE

Years ago the repetitive cry was ‘Nintendo’, then ‘PS3.’  Now I’m being driven demented by “Can I get a PS4?”  When will it stop or will they ever grow out it?  In another few years will it be “Can I get a car?” Continue reading
