School’s out – how do we keep the kids busy?

The school holidays are here.  Each summer I face the same challenge.  Home with three kids for two entire months – how will I keep them occupied, entertained or better still, busy?…  Teenage daughter will hang out with her friends.  The boys, though, are getting old for some of the summer camps and still too young to send off to work (damn!).

“When I was young there were no summer camps,” I chide my sons, trying to prod some gratitude for the opportunities they get.  However, there was plenty of work, but unpaid!  My mother inevitably had home decor and maintenance projects lined up like painting walls, gates, hanging wallpaper, weeding or picking blackcurrants….   Continue reading

Toddler Tantrums by cartoonist Maeve O’Keeffe

Cartoons from www.frazzledmammy.com, Cartoonist. Illustrator, Cork, Ireland, Maeve O'Keeffe

Toddler tantrums can take place in the shower!

I’ve taken to Twitter (@frazzled_mammy) and one of the topics that cropped up from Irish radio station 96FM is “Parents. When your child is having a public tantrum, what’s the least mortifying response from strangers? Wry smile or total indifference?”

I tweeted back.  Oh, believe me, I’ve been there.  I know what it’s like to have the place wailed down and you feel every disapproving eye looking at you judgementally.  Continue reading

Bossy by cartoonist Maeve O’Keeffe

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Now that exams are over and secondary school students will either do a course, get a job or loll in bed late to taunt younger siblings still stuck for another few days in Primary, some might wonder was the swotting worth it?   Will these students get that coveted college place or muster confidence to take their first step on the career ladder?

And what about girls?  Year after year we hear how females typically outperform boys in exam results.  Do these high achievers invariably win top jobs or is it still a ‘man’s world’?  Despite the feminist movement and academic success, the majority of managers, CEOs and company directors continue to be male.  Continue reading

White dress shopping can be every girl’s dream, provided the gown or shoes fit the bill!

With only a week to go before finishing Primary school for good, Junior needed photos ranging from babyhood to his present 6th class status.  A selection was required by teacher to create a slideshow of each pupil’s development through their school years.  As I rooted through boxes desperately seeking baby pictures, I cursed my disorganisation and failure to file the multiple packets of images into ordered, easy-to-view albums.

I flicked through the stash of communion photos and couldn’t help getting all nostalgic remembering how we kitted out our kids – the boys sporting big white badges on their dark rented blazers and the fun with daughter when we bought her white dress. Continue reading

Trampolines – beware of bumps, bruises and broken teeth!

Summer is here and so are trampolines – but beware of bumps, bruises and broken teeth!  Have you similar memories, dreadful disasters or funny stories to share? Post to my blog, Facebook frazzled mammy or email: frazzledmammy@outlook.com

With the first hope of summer sunshine, out come the barbecues and garden furnishing.  We go a bit mad, don’t we, with great intentions of planting summer bedding, outdoor painting and DIY?  Not to mention dusting down the trampoline?  But beware – this innocuous apparatus can be a dodgy danger zone!    Continue reading
